Black pepper, derived from the dried berries of the Piper nigrum vine, is a widely used spice known for its pungent, warm, and slightly bitter flavor. It is a perennial vine, native to the tropical forests of the Western Ghats of South India, and is cultivated extensively in Kerala and Karnataka. The berries are harvested when they turn red and then sun-dried until they become wrinkled and black, forming the peppercorns we use.
